Retro Slang
Slang words come and go. What is "cool" one day is "uncool" the next. Funky words that your grandma, your parents, and perhaps you have spoken. Some slang stays in style like "cool", and some if spoken out loud will probably get you strange looks, or beaten up. I thought I would honor those slang words from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's and give us all a flashback into the past of what was the hip thing to say.
WARNING: Jenna's Joughts do not recommend you actually saying these words to anyone. You run the risk of getting serious injury's, even death. Jenna's Jought's are not responsible for any thing of the kind, your on your own.
Coolsville 50's!
Ohhh, the 50's. A time of soda pop, who-la-hoops, and 50 cents a paper. And the slang words weren't bad either. At the time saying things with "ville" at the end was what they called ccccooooolllll. Doodyville, squaresville, weirdsville, baby, big daddy, blast, and of course cool are the many slang that was in.
The Dope 60's
No, I don't mean dope as in drugs, although it was the 60's so who knows. Cool things to say in the 60's were such words as bummed, burn rubber, cherry, cooties, dude, far out, flower child, gimme some skin, and the always favorite, the fuzz.
The Groovy 70's
The 70's probably have the most popular slang that gets made fun of or is pulled out every once and a while by your folks. Can you dig it, Psyche, Far out, That's sick, You know, Your Mama, Catch You On The Flip~side, chill, and boogie. Can you dig those words man?
The 411 on the 80's
Slang in the 80's is still used strongly today. You hear it all the time on the radio usually at the total 80's lunch hour! Words that would of been spoken are such as Air Head, Bangin', Big time, Bite me, Wicked, Way Cool, Trippendicular, Totally Tubular, Totally Awesome, The Joint, Rippen, Major, Killer, Def, Cool Beans, Bad, Awesome, and my personal favortie, Chicken, which apparently is a noun for money.
All That 90's
Slang in the 90's should be familiar with most people, considering how many of my readers were probably growing up in the 90's. Remember the slang like All that and a bag of chips, Aiight, As if, Bling-Bling, Boo-Ya, Cheddar, Crib, Chillin', Don't go there, Eat my shorts, Fly, Fool, Freak out, I'm gone, Let's roll, Oh snap, Old School, Po Po, Super, Sweet, and the ever so popular thanks to stupid girls, WHATEVER!
So there you have it, the slang of the good ol' days. And always remember the wise words of Thumber from Bambi, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all!"
Word!
I'm definitely torn between the '60s and '70s. I love this entry! You totally made me lol!
ReplyDeleteYou missed "Fresh" in the 80s. A much more prevalent slang use that is actually out of use and frowned on than say Bangin,' which is still in heavy use today... even in the urban communities.
ReplyDeleteHi, sorry it took me so to reply! Yes you are right, Fresh was quite popular in the 80s. Thanks for your comment!
